Eid Time

The good thing about spending Eid in Ottawa is I get to be with family and friends.

It’s definitely a more complete Eid, as far as being with loved ones is concerned.

The bad thing is Eid in Ottawa is hardly ever on the same day for everyone.

For as long as I’ve been here, Eid has seldom been celebrated on the same day by all the Muslims in this city.

If it were the country we were talking about, I might have been able to understand, because moon sightings can vary depending on geographic locations, but how is it that people in the same city celebrate Eid on different days?

I’ve never quite understood this, and to be honest it seems rather silly.

In my understanding, everyone celebrates Eid here today, whereas Canadian Pakistanis celebrate it tomorrow.

I’m not sure whether there are people of other origins who are also celebrating tomorrow, but it’s possible.

Why the division though?

Isn’t Eid supposed to be a time to celebrate together, and share happiness and good wishes?

Although Islam doesn’t permit segregations, Muslims have nonetheless separated themselves into countless groups, but do we also need to be separated on Eid?

Isn’t this a day of unity and togetherness, when we forget any (self-created) differences, and put it all aside?

Just like Islam doesn’t allow for segregation, I’m reasonably sure it doesn’t condone celebrating the same event in the same place on separate days either. That would defeat the purpose, if I dare say so.

Why this isn’t obvious to everyone is something I will probably never understand.

If we can’t come to an agreement about one day, how will we ever come to any sort of consensus on issues that threaten to differentiate and divide?

Perhaps this is a question that will remain unanswered for a long time.

Whether today or tomorrow, here’s hoping your Eid is blessed, and one which includes everyone, and not just those you hold near and dear.

Back to O-town

Not surprisingly, I find myself back in Ottawa (yet again).

My flight here was pretty uneventful, which is always a good thing as far as air travel is concerned.

I did catch something off the plane though, and spent the next two days after I got home in bed – asleep, other than when I woke up for six hours in between to eat, shower and the like.

I still have a sore throat, stuffy nose, and an annoying sinus problem, but hopefully it’ll get better, until the next time I travel anyway.

Halloween here was pretty quiet this year, and other than that I just ventured out to meet up with bestie in downtown.

It was cold, wet, and miserable outside – typical for this time of year here.

I had no plans to return to Ottawa, but as is usually the case, no matter how much I plan, something always ends up bringing (read dragging) me back here.

Maybe if there weren’t so much dragging, I’d miss the place myself and come voluntarily, but that’s something I’ll probably only find out when the time comes.

Maybe I just need to change the way I think about my trips here, and start appreciating them more, instead of grinding my teeth and saying how much I hate million hour flights.

I do despise flying though, so maybe I need to change the way I think about that as well and dupe myself into believing I actually like it.

On second thought, perhaps I should try to brainwash myself about everything else I find unfavorable too, like the weather, crocs, beetroot, housework, Paris Hilton’s celeb status, and the appeal of the Twilight series.

The world might be the same, but at least I’ll be a happy (albeit brainwashed) camper.

That’s going to be a whole lot of brainwashing though, and there’s always the chance I might accidentally brainwash myself into something unintentionally.

So in everyone’s best interest (especially my own), I’ll leave things as they are.

No one wants to have to bear with an accidentally brainwashed Annie who thinks she’s Paris Hilton and wears pink crocs to work, snacks on beets, and talks about how she’s either on “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob”, depending on which side of the bed she happened to fall out of that day.

Well I’m glad that’s settled then.

Now to make a more difficult decision, such as what am I going to have for lunch today?
And for those of you who are celebrating Diwali, have a great one. Tell me how you partied it up and what you did!

PMS Attack of the Day

It was probably more of a Menopause attack considering her age, but 63 year old retired school teacher Marlene wasted no time in behaving like a crazy old lady when she caught sight of a woman wearing a face veil two days ago.

An Emirati tourist was browsing in an upscale clothes boutique in Paris, when French national Marlene caught sight of her and asked her to remove her face veil.

France has recently passed a bill which allows authorities to fine Muslim women caught wearing face veils (also known as the Burqa), but the bill in question will be brought into effect six months later, to make sure everyone is aware of it.

Apparently, Marlene thought France’s discriminatory policy against women who choose to cover their face in public meant she could behave like a moron and take the law into her own hands.

When the Emirati lady refused to remove her veil, Marlene decided to do the honors and ripped the veil off her face.

When the (probably shocked) Emirati woman put her veil back on, she was scratched and bitten by mental Marlene, who says she knew she was going to “crack someday” because the Burqa debate was starting to “annoy” her.

Marlene was probably already cracked (or on crack) from before though, because she went on to say that she asked the woman to take her face veil off as she found it “unacceptable” that someone should be able to wear one in what she considers the “birthplace of human rights”.

She seems pretty confused about the term, which means all the years she spent in school were probably not enough to increase her brain capacity.

The idiotic school teacher now faces a $1000 (US) fine, and a two month suspended jail sentence.

Let’s hope she learns to keep her claws to herself next time!

T The man in Dubai who stabbed his girlfriend and
her colleagues…

A very desperate 41 year old showed up at his 23 year old girlfriend’s workplace in Dubai because he was tired of being ignored by her.

The woman did have reason to ignore her two-timing boyfriend because he very conveniently forgot to mention one minor detail before getting into a relationship with her – that he was in fact married.

It’s no surprise then that his girlfriend probably thought it was better to lose the conniving cheater than continue to waste time on him.

He obviously didn’t agree and showed up at her office with nothing less than a knife in hand.

The crazed (ex) lover then proceeded to stab his girlfriend 27 times, but luckily two of her workmates managed to rescue her.

The woman’s poor workmates also got sliced because of the man’s chopping board antics, and all three are now recovering.

The crazy attacker is now on trial but denies he ever intended to murder his girlfriend.

Slice her to bits and disfigure her perhaps, but not kill her. Yeah right.

Here’s hoping he gets what he deserves for his senseless crime!

Eid Greetings & Some Wishful Thinking

This Ramadan has been a strange one to say the least. Call me naïve, but I expected some of the violence in

Pakistan

(and all over the Muslim world for that matter) to abate during this Holy month at least.

I know that people who murder others have no religion, despite their claims to the contrary, but for some reason I thought even monsters like that must have a shred of mercy perhaps, for lack of a better word, and might spare people during this month of fasting.

I was very wrong of course.

First the public killing of two innocent young brothers in Sialkot, and then a few suicide bombings later, I am now convinced nothing is going to change in

Pakistan

any time soon.

Even massive flooding in the already fragile country hasn’t deterred the situation from worsening.

I guess when you know the law is ineffective and can’t, or won’t, prevent incidents of senseless death and destruction, you kind of start hoping that something, anything, else will.

I’ve even seen reports on television that show regular people taking advantage of the floods in Pakistan by hiking food prices, even in cases where the floods aren’t affecting any of the prices at all.

I suppose that’s nothing new, because that’s exactly what market vendors did after the earthquake in 2005. Again, I guess it was just silly of me to think that maybe they would act with more compassion this time, largely because the flooding in Pakistan is the worst the country has ever seen, and also because it is a humanitarian crisis of unparalleled magnitude. Also, it is Ramadan, and that should mean something to normal people, if not the ones who are involved in terrorist activities.

Again, I guess I was wrong.

Ramadan seems to mean nothing more to most than having delicious iftars, attending a sermon or two, and maybe attending the extra prayers at the mosque after Isha prayer.

I know that a lot of people are helping those affected by the floods, but there are so many more who are not only not helping, but probably making things more difficult by hiking prices and making people’s lives more arduous.

It’s probably not fair to blame them entirely though, because they probably can’t make ends meet either, which is why they feel the need to resort to such dishonest tactics. I prefer to think that’s the only reason people would behave that way, even though I know full well it isn’t.

In any case, Ramadan isn’t supposed to be just one month out of a year in which Muslims refrain from less than exemplary behavior. It’s supposed to be a whole month of fasting and thinking about what one wants to improve about one self, and then trying to stick to one’s self improvement goals throughout the year.

For a lot of people that seems to be very difficult though, which is why I thought that maybe, just maybe, some would at least desist from wrongdoing and harming others during this one month.

Of course, I was wrong.

And now as Eid approaches, I somehow can’t shake the feeling of sadness at a nation’s failed and corrupted morality.

This Eid will be a bittersweet one for me, because I’ll be thinking of all those unfortunate people who lost their lives, and all the families that have been destroyed, either because of the floods or more regrettably, because of the unnecessary and unending violence in the country we call

The Games We Play

Of late, I’ve developed a very bad habit. I guess it would be more accurate to call it a new bad habit, since it’s not the only one I have.

A few months ago I started playing Pet Society – a game on Facebook that revolves around your very own virtual pet.

You can “create” the critter you want, which includes everything from its facial features to its color to the markings on its cute little self.

Every day there’s a “lottery” which lets you win free “coins”. “Coins” can also be won in various other ways, and the more “coins” you have, the “richer” you are, and the more “items” you can buy.

New “items” are added to the virtual pet shops every week. This includes everything from “clothes” for your “pet”, to food items, to furniture for its home, to toys and lots of other fun things.

You can even choose from different types of cute little “petlings” for your “pet”, and yes, I know how corny it all sounds.

I have wasted considerable time on this silly game, and I must say it has been a very enjoyable experience. Don’t judge me until you’ve played it though. If you’re the reasonable person I think you are, you’ll have more sense than to take me up on my frivolous challenge, which in turn means you won’t be able to judge me. I much prefer it that way.

The other day, my sister was playing something called “Baking Life”, and every time I saw her sneaking off to “check” on her little bakery, I’d laugh and make fun of her to my heart’s content. It was payback time for all the ridicule I routinely went through because of my virtual pet addiction.

Little did I know, that my trap was already set.

When my sister published a Facebook “story” urging me to adopt an abandoned “puppy” that had wandered into her “bakery”, I thought I’d check the game out only because I wanted the “puppy”.

Two “puppies” and a “kitten” later, I was thoroughly into the game, “baking”, “selling” and “expanding” my mint, chocolate, and raspberry colored cozy bakery.

The more “goods” you sell, the higher the “profit” you make, and the more levels you “unlock”, which in turn increases the types of things you can “bake”, which means you can then earn more “coins” to “buy” more “items” for your “bakery” and your virtual avatar, both of which you can style as you like.

I’d tell you more about it, but I have to go and check on something in the “oven”.

Achey Breaky Stomach

We were in Pakistan for just four days, but my dad still managed to get sick while there.
He ate something that obviously didn't agree with him at my cousin's wedding function, and got so ill he had to be taken to emergency and get admitted. Thankfully he did come home after a few hours, but had to be hooked up to an IV even at home.
Because of his condition my dad even missed the reception from the groom's side the next day. He had us all extremely worried and we were relieved to see him gain back his strength little by little.
Now that we're back home, he's still recovering, but there's something I asked him throughout his ordeal.
"WHY in the world did you NEED to eat that?", was my question regarding his erroneous food choice.
Every few hours I'd moan and ask him the above question.
Soon after our trip came to an end, and while we were checked in at the airport, I felt a sharp pain in my stomach.
More pain, and stomach rumbling later, it became obvious I'd eaten something that was causing my discomfort.
My sister's stomach ached too, but my condition was far worse.
"I was trying to tell you not to eat that pizza, but you were so busy you didn't even look at me. Not only that, but you went ahead and took some more," my mom said in an annoyed tone.
"Why did you eat it? You know things from bakeries aren't always clean, especially dairy. You should have had enough common sense not to have touched that!"
I moaned and protested that I had some takeaway pizza from a place a day ago and nothing had happened, so it didn't strike me to be careful.
The rest of the time all I said was, "It was the cheese, it was the cheese," as well as writhe in pain.
It has been a few days since we have been back now, but my stomach has still not settled down. Last night I stayed awake late because of the pain, and finally agreed to take some medicine this morning.
My dad makes sure I drink some of his ORS from time to time, so I don't get dehydrated and fall down or something.
He hasn't once asked me why I had to scoff down not one but two slices loaded with cheese of unknown origins.
I guess that makes us even then, because since that day, I haven't complained about why he had to dig into whatever it was that made him sick.

I can't believe it's been a month since I last blogged. How fast time flies!
Actually, I can't really blame time here. I've just been adjusting to my move here, and for some reason that means spending a lot of time asleep, or tired, or both.
It's not that I haven't been up to much, it's just that I didn't have the energy or the time left over from when I was done with whatever I was doing.
Even as I write this, I can feel the familiar yearning to curl up in my cozy bed and take a long afternoon nap, but I think I'll resist the urge because I woke up at noon anyway.
I hope now you see why I've been M.I.A. If I didn't sleep as much as I do, I would get so much more done. Or in my case, I'd at least get a reasonable amount of work done. Time is a difficult thing to run after when you spend half of it asleep.
And now I also have some rest to catch up on after my four day trip to attend a cousin's wedding.
When it comes to trips, particularly trips to my home country, "short and sweet" is the motto I abide by.
This was a good one, but in the event of that not happening, there's not much to bear if you keep things short.
I only wish my dad had listened to me last year, when we went to another cousin's wedding. It would have saved us the misery and awkwardness of being stuck in the midst of relatives who wanted to do nothing but show us how unhappy they were at something or another I might have said to one of them months ago.
Anyways, I'll have more for you later. Right now I have a bit more sleep to catch up on.

It has been almost two weeks since I left Ottawa for Dubai, and I'm still having trouble getting my routine straight.
Two nights of flying, and one very long, tiring, and not so pleasant day in London can do that to you I suppose.
Unlike last time however, most of the furniture we ordered for our new place has arrived, with the exception of a coffee table and two end tables for the living room. For those, the hunt is on.
The search for wallpaper has also begun. And for rugs. And for the numerous other things you need to make a house feel like a home.
As I write, my parents and sister are out yet again hunting for a living room table. I opted to stay home on account of not feeling too great. I'm sure I can use the rest for all the roaming around we're going to do, as we've been doing even before we actually moved into our new apartment.
My only concern is having to do this all over again before we move into our new villa in Dubai which will probably be ready sometime next year.
I did warn my dad that making a villa was going to be a huge headache, something he seems to be realizing only now. Just looking at the huge variety of marble slabs, tiles, doors, doorknobs, and all sorts of things you have to choose when you custom design a house, made me feel dizzy when we were out one day.
I really don't want to think about the huge amounts of time and energy that are going to be guzzled away as we shop for everything for the new place from top to bottom.
I would have said that's what you have designers and decorators for, but judging by our experience with them for this apartment, I'd say you have designers only to have someone who presents you with things so you can decide what you most definitely don't want.
I suppose it's like house help. You can't leave them to their own devices unless you're prepared to be surprised, or shocked, depending on the final result.
Things are better in our new apartment this time around though, with no construction going on from dawn to midnight in the building across, and much less shouting by workers camping on site at odd hours of the night.
The elevators have been tidied up and stripped of their cardboard boxes too, and visits by annoying building staff aren't a regular feature either.
The only thing I found a little strange at first was that one second, you have a wonderful view from your window, and the next, you find a man staring at you dangling from the other side of it.
The first time this happened, I was having a conversation standing next to the window in the kitchen. I turned around to grab a glass and was startled to see a man who seemed to have descended from the sky and gotten stuck to the window, in a perfect sitting yoga type position. I'm still not sure what he was doing there or why he decided to make an appearance.
Today I was woken up in the morning by some noise outside my bedroom window. I looked only to find yet another worker stuck to my window. This time it was a window cleaner. The same thing happened yesterday, but at a different time.
All the windows in the building are tinted, so I know no one can see inside during the day. I'm still a little unsure about someone who's stuck to the window though.
Looks like I'll have to try for myself. The next time I come across a tinted window I'm going to stick to it and see if I can see what's going on inside. Maybe I'll even pretend to be a window cleaner so no one suspects me. I don't want to be known as the weird girl who peeps through people's windows though. Then again, I don't particularly want to be known as a window cleaner either. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but if I'm not one then it doesn't really make much sense does it?
I am starting to wonder though, is it really necessary to clean all the windows of a 48 floor building every day? That's a whole lot of Windex. And if in fact the window cleaners can see inside, also a whole lot of peeping.

Free Speech or Hate Speech? Facebook's Two Faced Policies

What I am about to write in this post is not typical of what I usually blog about.
I decided to go ahead though because I feel I need to share this information with all of you.
My aim is to raise awareness about the issue that's going to be discussed from a human rights perspective.
Outside the West, it can sometimes be a very slippery slope deciding what constitutes freedom of expression and what does not.
In the West however, the case isn't quite the same.
Or so we might like to think.
I do not condone or agree with the method the person in the letter I'm going to share with you chose to make his point, but I do believe if one group's rights are worthy of protection then so are another's.
This letter comes at a time when most of the "Draw Muhammad(P.B.U.H) Day" protests and anger have settled down a little.
This incident has raised many issues in my mind though, such as why certain groups are allowed to express their ideas, whereas others are ridiculed and lashed out against simply for defending attacks on theirs.
This letter is a reminder that stereotypes of certain groups and hatred towards them does exist in the West, which could be the basis for discrimination against them. It might be up to us then to combat these in the most positive ways possible.
I have personally experienced the hatred and derogatory words of those "championing" this "free speech cause" so I know first hand exactly how ignorant some individuals are.
By sharing this letter with you, I hope to make you stop and think for a bit.
Why is it that certain things are labeled free speech, and others hate speech?
Why is it that when it comes to certain groups, hate speech parading as free speech is actually something to be protected rather than condemned?
Why is it that some people can get away with such uncalled for, abusive, offensive and derogatory behavior, while others doing the same or similar things cannot?
We need to wake up and think about why there are so many double standards.
We've been asleep for long enough. It's time to stop shying away from the reality of certain things and look them in the eye.
I know I'm ready.

This letter was written by a Facebook user in Pakistan, in light of the "Draw Muhammad(P.B.U.H) Day" controversy.

I had been banned from Facebook and my account had been disabled a night before Facebook was banned in Pakistan. Before all this happened, I visited the blasphemous page “Draw Muhammad Day” and the content on the page hurt me badly.
Once again a certain group of westerners called it the “freedom of expression” and went on to show extremism – something they always verbally disassociate themselves from.
As a response to this lunacy, I thought it best to find out how they respond to others’ right of freedom of expression – I created an Adolf Hitler page right away and it read, “To all those who think they can ridicule Islam in the name of freedom of expression and yet punish those who speak of the genius of Hitler”.
The comment on the wall read, “Let’s hit them where it hurts them the most”. Further I added some photos of the Fuhrer, Nazi Party and the Italian Footballer Paolo Di Canio who was banned and fined by FIFA two years ago for performing the “controversial” Roman Salute which according to him gave him a sense of belonging to his people.
Within an hour tens of people joined the Hitler page which was named “H | T L E R”. The very next time I tried to log in I found out that my profile had been disabled for ‘violation of Facebook Regulations’.

Facebook’s reply for my inquiry was as following (also shown in above screenshot):

Hi Saad,

After reviewing your situation, we have determined that your violated our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. One of Facebook’s main priorities is the comfort and safety of our users.
We do not tolerate hate speech. Targeting people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or disease is a serious violation of our standards and has resulted in the permanent loss of your account.
We will not be able to reactivate your account for any reason. This decision is final.

Now how is it that Hitler is termed as the most evil person in the history of mankind while those that bomb Muslims, commit heinous crimes in their countries, ridicule their Prophet and Quran and as a result hurt the sentiments of 1.2 billion Muslims are hailed as heroes? And I wonder why the victims of Holocaust are more important than victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Despite the protest of a large number of Muslims, Facebook has not removed the blasphemous page from the website.
According the statement issued by Facebook their policy is to withhold such content in countries where it is controversial. The statement specifically says that we do not remove Nazi content from Facebook because it is illegal only in a few countries.
As two-faced statements go, this one takes the prize. Perhaps before issuing the statement the Facebook did not realise that words like “Adolf Hitler”, “Sieg Heil” and “Nazi” are not allowed to be used on Facebook to create new pages.
And if all this and the removal of Hitler page and the permanent deactivation of my profile isn’t enough, here is a testament to Facebook’s vile hypocrisy.
The statement issued by Facebook on 20 May says, “We strongly believe that Facebook users have the freedom to express their opinions, and we don’t typically take down content, groups or pages that speak out against countries, religions, political entities, or ideas.”
While, in another instance, Facebook replied me in entirely different way. Excerpt and screenshot is given above.
Now these two conflicting statements speak volumes about the discrimination by the Facebook. It simply means that Facebook through its official statement to global media wants the world to believe that they are the torchbearers of freedom of expression and allow everyone to speak their minds out.
On the other hand the face that individuals like me get to see is a much horrible one. It talks about hate and intolerance and all forms of so-called equality and unshakable resolve. While Facebook is portraying itself as the silent and innocent onlooker for the entire world, I wonder what gives them the right to remove a major chunk of my life from the web.
I don’t think Facebook should come up with any clarification statements for the Muslim world over what happened.
It is clearer than crystal that as long as we are labelled as extremists, we are not going to enjoy the equal rights in this world. And those that are trying to play God love to label us that.
While reporting the Facebook ban in Pakistan in different articles, guardian.co.uk mentions the brutality of Pakistan Army in Swat while Yahoo thinks it’s necessary to unveil Al-Qaida’s plans of attacks on Danish and Dutch football teams.
It is a blatant attempt to criticize Pakistan for placing the ban, link the country to extremism and terrorism and thereby justifying this sacrilegious act of Facebook users.

Lost and Finally Found

For a few days now, I have been putting some (relatively) serious thought into what to do with my blog.
Before you burst into a happy dance, let me assure you that I am not thinking of deleting it.
I've been thinking about what I write on my blog and why.
I started it initially because I wanted to have a kind of "portfolio". Something to make it a bit easier for those I submit my work to, so they can decide if they might like to have me write for them.
As I wrote more articles for DesiVibe though, as well as just wrote more in general, I began to realize what I enjoyed writing most.
I became more certain that I didn't want to go into journalism, or any kind of field where I'd be restricted to writing only neutral or factual type pieces.
I love voicing my opinions, being creative, and asking for my readers' opinions as well. I really do enjoy knowing what others think, not just about my writing but about different issues in general.
World events are always important of course, but I found that I gravitate more towards more subjective topics like observations on the world around us, and issues that define and concern certain groups of people perhaps. I guess that would be included in the realm of personal, anecdotal, and even cultural discussion type writing.
Some time ago, I decided to change my blog's direction, and write about what it's like to be shuffling confusedly between Ottawa and Dubai, among "other stuff".
Unfortunately, I forgot the former part of my blog description, and got caught up in the "other stuff".
I'd remember periodically that I was also supposed to be writing about my experiences, which is when you'd get the more personal type blog posts, but overall I believe I failed to do justice to what I had set out to do.
Lest I get sidetracked again, I've gone and made some changes to my blog description and how I'm going to approach topics now.
I'm too much of a wanderer though, and don't like to confine myself, so there will still be a mish mash of things on my blog. That'll probably help prevent things from getting too serious or monotonous, which is always good, right?
So what can you expect from this blog?
You can expect the honest and candid thoughts, experiences, and situations, a 20 something, Canadian Desi girl finds herself in as she lives in two totally different parts of the world.
The first is a part of the contemporary Western world, and the second, the modern Arab world of today. There is a third too, my homeland, which I visit for a few days every now and then.
I understand and respect all three cultures, even though I don't agree completely with everything in any of them. I am aware of the advantages and pitfalls of each place, and maybe that's what makes it difficult to decide which one truly comes out on tops.

We come across all sorts of people, and perhaps that’s part of what makes life so interesting. Without some irritating intruders, how would we ever know the difference between those we want to spend time with, and those we consider a waste of energy? You need to have experienced the bad to appreciate the good, right? That’s a more positive way to look at it anyway.

There is a whole variety of individuals worth discussing, but there is only so much that can be talked about in one article.

Today then, we’ll be talking about that category of people who seem more like descendents of the leech family or some combination of human and leech genes that have mutated together over time. For your convenience, I have named this type of person, “The Human Leech”. Just to make it easier for us to discuss and educate ourselves on, of course.

For Moms - Mine, Yours, and Everyone Else's

I didn't need to think long and hard to know that anything I say on this topic has already been said in one form or another. That doesn't mean I'm not going to try though.
I'll start with a few beautiful quotes. These three stood out in particular.

Making a decision to have a child--it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. Elizabeth Stone

The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. Honore de Balzac

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. Abraham Lincoln

And finally, the simplest and most beautiful saying on mothers was uttered by none other than the Holy Prophet Muhammad, (Peace Be Upon Him).

"Paradise lies under the feet of your mother."

The Holy Quran's description of Heaven is not extremely detailed, but it does speak of a place so beautiful and wholesome in its perfection that the human mind can't even fathom it.
Such then, is the position awarded to mothers that the Holy Prophet said that Heaven itself lies at their feet.

Whenever I'm worried because things are getting a little overwhelming, all I need to do is put my head in my mom's lap, and all my worries seem to melt away like a bar of ice cream on a scorching summer day.
Even if we don't speak, and she doesn't ask me a single question, I always leave feeling much better than before.
If you don't believe me, try it for yourself.

And now here's a little message to my mother, and to all mothers. A message from those living at home like me and my siblings, or those who live in a different house in the same city, or country, or continent.

Most of us really do love our mothers, and really do respect and appreciate what they do and have done for us, even though we may not always show it, say it, or even behave like it.
True to my nature, I forgot to buy my mom a Mother's Day card, and didn't bother buying a present because I figured everything I gave her would be left unused (as it always is).
She doesn't even like cake, chocolate, or any kind of dessert much, so that ruled that out.
True, I could have gotten up early, gotten dressed, and gone out to buy a bouquet of fresh flowers, but my laziness got in the way as usual.
My mom didn't get upset, but she did say I make excuses just like my little brother, (both of us are terrible at giving gifts on time, and are just generally late as well).
That may be true, but the thing is, I really didn't think I needed to go out and buy stuff to show my mom that I cared.
Then again, I didn't even bother doing anything to show her I do, other than shouting out "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY" every hour starting from when I woke up, to when she went to bed.
Immature maybe, but I had to make up for the card my sister got her, and because I had to show her that I too, remembered, even though I had no concrete proof of it in the form of a card, or gift, or anything else.
Perhaps that's why I'm writing this, "out of guilt", as my mom said, when I yelled out "Happy Mother's Day!" for the umpteenth time today.
So my dearest mama, I really do love you, and I really do care. Hopefully I'll get my act together next Mother's Day. Till then, you can read this every time you get annoyed at something or another I am bound to do during the course of the year.

Music In Your Tie?

There's a new tie on the market. It's called a Sonic Fabric Tie and is designer Alyce Santoro's brainchild.
This tie is different from other ties made from recycled material because it uses old audio cassette tape as one of its main components.
Each tie is made from a combination of cassette tape and colored thread, and the ratio is about 50% of each.
The designer didn't just use any old cassette tape though. She used tape with music from the streets of New York, including some from one of her own CD's.
What makes these ties even more unique is the fact that you can actually hear some of the music when you run a playhead over the fabric portion of the tie.
Each tie retails for $90 US, and can be ordered online.
As for the playhead, if you have an old walkman or cassette player lying around, you can pull it apart and remove the head from inside to listen to some NYC beats right from your very own tie.

Ready, Set, Race!

The 15th year of the Dubai World Cup took place in the newly unveiled race course in Dubai called "Meydan", last Saturday.

The race course, the only one of its kind in the world, is earning rave reviews from everyone who's seen it, and everyone who attended Saturday's 10 million dollar race.
Meydan is the most expensive horse racing facility in the world, and is estimated to have cost $2 billion US.
The facility also boasts a 290 bedroom five star hotel, including an IMAX cinema inside. Meydan's huge car park is an expression of art in itself, fashioned in the shape of a falcon.

Meydan's official opening ceremony, as well as all the entertainment between races, was said to be absolutely spectacular.

The Dubai World Cup is one of the most anticipated events of the year, and people come out for more reasons than just the obvious ones.

The fashion for one, is always top notch at these events. Everyone dons their finest, and often the head gear worn by the women attending generates a lot of interest.

This year, 500 fashionistas, twice as many as last year, took part in the "Style Stakes" contest, where a panel of judges decides who deserves to win the title of "Best Dressed Lady", and "Best Dressed Couple".

Apart from getting to boast their titles, the winners also get prizes like a Range Rover on lease for a year, gorgeous jewelery, a weekend getaway and a desert safari, as well as a spa treatment.

The competition is tough, so victory is probably all the more sweet.

On or Off?

With this year's Earth Hour behind us, it's now time to be introspective.
Okay, not really. I just thought it might make a mildly interesting post.
Did you participate in this year's global switch off?
I'm not going to lie, I honestly didn't feel like switching off anything. The enthusiasm I had for the day last year was missing this year.
Despite my apathy, I did what had to be done.
My enthusiasm might be gone, but my conscience is still there.
I would have felt terribly guilty had I sat through the hour with everything switched on, especially since my neighborhood was as dark as the darkest woods.
I spent Earth Hour sitting in our family room, with a candle for light, and a laptop that's screen seemed to burn holes in my eyes with its suddenly abnormally intense light.
In case you're wondering, it was on battery power.
In my understanding that's alright, unless any of you tell me otherwise of course. Then I'll have to bother finding out properly.
I did consider making use of the hour by taking a shower, but I wasn't sure how I'd be able to do that in the dark without breaking at least a few significant bones. I opted to stay in my pajamas, eat a few Oreos, and tinker around on my laptop.

Everyone blinks their eyes, now you can bling them too!

Want everyone to see the sparkle in your eyes?
Swarovski has come up with a way to help in the quest for beautiful, bright, shining eyes.
Anthony Mallier, the person behind the idea, has designed contact lenses that have Swarovski crystals embedded in them.
The lenses have been named "Sparkle", and intend to make your eyes do just that.
One can't help but wonder whether it's a good idea to tamper with something that sits in the eye like this.
A mere particle of dust on the surface of a contact lens can be extremely uncomfortable and cause damage to the eye of the wearer, so it will be really interesting to see how wearable these lenses are, and how they perform in the long run.
Then again, those are issues the designer probably considered before developing such a product, right?

In the Mood for Gloss?

Make up company Too Faced has come out with a new line of lip gloss called, "Mood Swing Emotionally Activated Lip Gloss".
The gloss comes in four different shades, and each $18.50 tube comes with a "color chart".
As the wearer's mood changes, so does the color of the lip gloss.
The color chart helps to tell the wearer what each color change means, and what mood it corresponds to.
The concept is the same as that of the "mood ring", and just like it, this seems to be a product made purely for novelty sake.
Why would someone want the make up on their face changing color, and that too without their control?
Some women may buy this gloss for fun, but it doesn't seem like a product that's going to be around for a very long time.

Quite a bit of my one month trip to Sharjah was spent doing things revolving around our new apartment there.

Although my dad had moved in by the time my mom and I arrived, there was still a lot to be done.

The apartment is still not completely furnished, and we're still waiting for the rest of our family, living, and dining room furniture from the place we ordered it to be custom made.

We've moved countless times, and have lived in different places, and in more than 20 different houses, but each time is an experience in itself.

I thought I'd share a bit about what this particular move was like.

It's Time to Click

Last week I started the photojournalism course I'd enrolled in before I left for my month long getaway to the Gulf.
My first class was just a few days after I landed back in Ottawa, so I had to attend, jet lagged, dazed, suffering from wisdom tooth pain, and all.
Our first assignment was to take news paper submission type photographs of the change in weather in Ottawa over the weekend.
I did the assignment, of course, but let's just say I was less than confident about the results.
Everyone else in the class has all the proper equipment they need, because they either are, or intend to become photographers of some sort.
I'm the odd one out.
I plan to continue to just write. I'm taking the course to gain a better understanding of the photographic aspects of a news paper or magazine.
During my internship at Insider magazine in Dubai, I was lucky enough to be able to work at the pictures desk, and I must say it was fun.
That piqued my interest, so here I am, doing a course purely to learn. It might help of course, but there's no concrete benefit to me from doing this, other than satiating my own curiosity.
Learning for the sake of learning. Such a dated yet romantic notion. I know, nerdy.
Surprisingly though, the professor actually liked some of the things I managed to come up with.
He knows I'm no photographer, and lack the proper equipment or techniques, but told me I have a very artistic eye, and was impressed by my thought process and creativity.
That's what matters most anyway, right?
You can always learn techniques and polish up raw talent, but if you don't have the sense or aptitude for something, you can't go out and acquire that from somewhere.
For the moment, that's all the feed back I need to know I'm off to a good start. Just like with most other things in life, I'm hoping the rest will come with time.

The Multiplication of Pain

Growing older doesn't necessarily mean growing up, as most of you already know I'm sure.
One (among many) annoying things about growing up, or getting older, or however else you put it, is that you very quickly realize that some of the things you celebrated as a child, become royal pains once you're grown up.
In this case, that would be the royal pain in my mouth.
When we're younger, the sight of a new tooth poking through our little pink gums makes us feel proud, and seems like proof of our growing up.
When you're in your twenties however, the very same thing can become a never ending nightmare.
The wisdom tooth that has been struggling to make it through your swollen gum is not only an eye sore, but a source of unbelievable pain too.
Not only does your erupting tooth make your face look like a swollen turnip from one side, it also hurts so much that sometimes you feel like you might just pass out from all the pain.
And that wouldn't be an entirely bad thing either - anything to stop the agony.
Agreed, I probably should have gotten the surgery I was supposed to years ago, to remove all four of my stubborn wisdom teeth before they became a source of torture, even though it's really only one of them that causes me misery every now and then.
Yesterday, after more than five days of sheer agony, I finally dragged myself to the doctor because I could feel my throat becoming sore.
The good news is, contrary to what I thought, my problematic wisdom tooth isn't really infected.
The bad news is, it could be very soon, and my throat is already infected, because of which I now have to shove antibiotics into my mouth three times a day for the next ten days.
I finished a course of the horrid things just less than a month ago, to clear up a throat infection that had gone into one of my lungs.
That probably had something to do with my unwillingness to visit the clinic sooner, because I waited long enough for the infection to spread from my throat to my poor, unsuspecting lung.
It's a lesson I learn over and over again, yet fail to act upon.
Next time though, I'll try to make sure things go differently.
I'll try to get things sorted out on time instead of trying to ignore them, the result of which is a bigger mess in the end.
This is probably something I, and all of us, could benefit from in other areas of our lives too.
If something is bothering you, don't let it just sit there and multiply.
Get rid of it as soon as you can, right from the root.
I should have done the same with my agony inducing wisdom tooth as well.
Then again, there's always next time.
Which brings me to another important lesson here - wisdom (or the absence of it) has absolutely nothing to do with wisdom teeth.
If it did, I'd have lots of it, because the rest of my wisdom teeth have come out properly, and they seem to be doing fine at the moment.

In Ottawa - Here, There, or Everywhere?

One thing has become very clear to me after this particular trip, and my subsequent return flight to Ottawa.
Sometimes, the only way we can decide where we truly want to be, is by being somewhere else.
For the last three years, I have been torn between what seem like opposite ends of the earth.
The U.A.E, where I spent my childhood and most of my teenage years, or Ottawa, where I went to university, completed my undergrad, and got to experience things not everyone is lucky enough to have a chance to experience.
My first job was in Ottawa, (never mind that it was a terrible experience and probably did a fair amount of psychological damage).
Similarly, my first internship was in Dubai, a much better experience, even though I probably should have had more to do.
Ottawa has always been about a lot of firsts, good and bad, and for the first time I realized, that the same is going to be true about Dubai, if I choose to make that my home.
I'm not entirely sure why it took me years to be able to decide where I want to stay put, at least for a good chunk of time now.
This trip made me realize that I'm tired of being a ping pong ball.
I don't want to just up and leave every few months.
I don't want to feel like I belong in two different places with totally different lifestyles all the time.
I don't want to pack, unpack, and have to get used to just having arrived in another place every few months.
But most of all, I don't want to feel that I don't really belong anywhere anymore, even though I have two places to call home.
So which am I going to leave, and which will I embrace?
I'd tell you now, but that would take the fun out of it.

To Ottawa - The end of a hectic month

My one month here is up, and it's time to pack my bags (once again) already.
I'm leaving for Ottawa tomorrow, and I can honestly say the day has come too soon.
The past month has been mainly about furniture hunting, shopping, eating out, and a bit of sightseeing and socializing (as much as was possible with the time left after all those other activities).
It has been a short but mostly fun trip, with hardly any time for blogging or writing.
I do have two articles lined up though, and maybe even a few blog posts about my experiences during my short (but far from uneventful) trip.
Anecdotes about moving, and Desi families, as well as their politics often make for an interesting read.
That'll all have to wait though, because I have two suitcases to start stuffing things into.
You'll get to hear from me from the other side of the ocean now.

Ottawa to Dubai - In Dubai

I know I've been missing in action for a while now.

Just like I do every few months, I had to catch a flight to Dubai on the 17th of last month.

My parents plan on moving to Dubai for good sometime next year when our villa there is completed. At the moment though, we live in its neighboring emirate, Sharjah, because that's where my dad works.

Contrary to what most might think, I haven't been blogging because I've hardly had time to sit down and write since I've gotten here, and it's not because of my extremely lazy-to-the-point-of-being-debilitating nature.

My mom, dad, and myself have been busy going around doing all sorts of things because we just moved into our own place here in Sharjah.

Because it's a new place, and because we didn't bring a single item of furniture (as well as other household things) from our old place, it's like starting all over again.

It's a lot of fun, no doubt.

But it's also very tiring, time consuming, energy sapping, and downright frustrating at times.

We got most of our furniture custom made, according to what we had in mind for each of our rooms.

I picked out the theme and colours for my room, as well as my sister's, who is still in Ottawa, and couldn't be bothered to tell me what it was that she wanted done to her room.

Not to brag, but our rooms turned out pretty neat, so all those hours spent figuring out every little detail with the interior designers finally paid off.

I'll be back, with more details of what I've been up to here.

Perhaps it’s true that the things you try to avoid the most are the ones that follow you everywhere.

A very nice aunty I like, (no sarcasm intended, she really is nice and I really do like her), had suggested that my parents “take a look” at someone in her extended family who she thought would be a good “match” for me.

Only, she hadn’t actually seen the potential match in years, or maybe even ever, I’m not sure. That didn’t seem to deter her from recommending him though, and from telling my mom that he was very “handsome”.

Not to be judgmental, but most of the time I’ve heard an aunty call someone handsome, they aren’t really handsome. Tall, perhaps. Dark, maybe, but not handsome. Hardly ever handsome.

MizzPinkx Greetings - Lucky?

You know those people whose plans and schemes always end up backfiring in the most blow-up-in-your-face kind of way?
And those people who are never in the right place at the right time, usually through no fault of their own but because of fate, or destiny, or luck, or whatever it is that causes things like that.
I seem to fit into that unfortunate category.
The place I first worked at closed down a few months later, and the place I interned at last summer might be heading the same way.
Naturally, it has occurred to me that maybe I have something to do with these unfavorable happenings.
But perhaps things are going to change now.
A few days ago I went to a mall here in Ottawa with my mom, only to find it closed.
It was only one in the afternoon, so that made no sense at all.
The lights were off, but I could see people inside. My mom and I decided to take a chance and go in anyway. We saw lots of people, some sitting, and many milling around in a dark mall with all the stores closed.
On inquiry, we found out the power in the area was out, and no one knew when it might be back.
I told my mom it was useless, and we should just head back, even though I felt thoroughly irritated. My mom convinced me to wait for a few minutes, and just as I agreed and began to walk towards a table, all the lights came on.
I couldn’t help but beam from ear to ear because we were the only ones who had just entered the mall at the time and lo and behold!
We started walking towards a still motionless escalator, which people were walking up, when I suggested using the stairs in case it started working and going the wrong way.
My mom pooh-poohed my idea so I decided to use the escalator anyway, and as soon as I stepped onto it, it started working. And in the right direction too.
Maybe I’m not unlucky after all. Or maybe whatever it was has now left me alone and my luck is going to get better. Maybe this was some sort of a sign of things to come.
Or maybe it was all just in my head, and I am in fact lucky, as my mom says, (even though I’m sure the last part is just to make me feel better).
Whatever the case, I guess I’ll find out sooner or later.

The latest sunglasses collection from Tiffany seems to have been designed with Audrey Hepburn as its inspiration.
Using the style icon as inspiration makes good sense because of her eternally chic status.
The new sunglasses come in three different colours and each pair is accompanied by three charms. The colours available are pink and plum, red and brown, and tiffany blue and black. Of the charms, one is a heart, one is the letter T, and one is the logo of the company (Tiffany and Co).
The chic shades are now available throughout Tiffany stores and at a few select boutiques.
At $320 a piece, they aren't too bad a deal, because they are designer glasses after all.
For Tiffany lovers and Audrey Hepburn fans, this just might be the gift they’d love to get their hands on this christmas season.

Iran Bans Women from Wearing Make up

State TV in Iran has banned the use of make up on air.
Any woman caught wearing make up will be pulled off the air. A law already exists in the country which prohibits women from wearing any kind of make up.
The reasoning the state provides for this law is that make up is "offensive to older people and children", which is why women should not be allowed to use it.
Not surprisingly, state run TV is not popular in the country, with many viewers turning to foreign channels for their entertainment needs.
Not many would want to watch programs that adhere to an archaic set of rules when there are so many other options available. If anything, the state’s aim should be to draw in as many viewers as possible, rather than to alienate them further.
Banning men from wearing colourful make up in public is another matter, but banning those who have to be on TV, particularly women, sounds rather ridiculous.
In this day and age, a law like this seems very outdated, if not petty. Authorities should be concerned with solving the greater issues that plague their country, instead of wasting time and energy on such silly ones.
Women all over the world have used different forms of make up to beautify themselves all through the ages. Every woman has the right to look and feel beautiful, and for the state to interfere in such matters is rather unfair.
The idea that women wearing make up is offensive to older people and children is even sillier. Some people may find men who wear make up offensive, but it makes no sense for anyone to get offended by women using something that is made for their use in the first place.
Seems like the state tried to come up with some sort of a legitimate sounding reason, but failed to put forth anything that made sense.
Hopefully they’ll come to their senses soon and drop this useless law!

Victoria Beckham Denim

Victoria Beckham, ex Spice Girl and football star David Beckham’s wife, is re launching her denim clothing line.
The collection will feature lots of denim in the form of pieces like boyfriend jeans, jackets, cut offs, tights, and skinny jeans.
The line was previously called dVb and wasn’t selling too well. Prices started at $235, so perhaps most women weren't willing to shell out that amount for a pair of jeans.
The collection is now called Victoria Beckham Denim and you’d think with a new name and a re launch, the prices might be revised too.
No such luck though, because Victoria isn’t tweaking any of them.
Hopefully she designed the pieces with real women in mind though, and not just extremely skinny ones like herself. If starved looking women are the only ones who’ll look good in the clothes, there’s even less hope for the line than previously thought.

Men in Women Inspired Clothing - What Next?

We all know fashion can be anything from whacky, to weird, to downright absurd. These new styles definitely belong in the last category.
H&M recently unveiled its spring 2010 collection. Nothing says spring more than flowing skirts, dresses, and light, breezy clothing, but this time there’s a twist.
The men’s collection included parachute pants, and believe it or not, a kilt.
And that's not all. Prada and Marc Jacobs have already showcased their women-inspired fashions as part of their spring collection for next year.
While it's true that "boyfriend" jeans, tops, and cardigans were the look of the season, that doesn't mean it'll work when applied in reverse.
Not quite sure which kind of buyers these fashions will be a hit with, but whoever they are, hope they don't leave their houses dressed like that.
Unfortunately, there is such a thing as too much fashion, and this is a fine example of a catastrophic look in the making!

CNIB's Gift Wrap at Bayshore Mall

This Christmas season, give some of your time to help those who truly need it.
CNIB is holding its annual Gift Wrap all through the month of December up until the 24th.
The month long gift wrapping event will take place at Bayshore Shopping Centre right here in Ottawa, and volunteers are needed to make it a success. All donations will go towards funds for the charity.
According to its website, “CNIB is a nationwide, community-based, registered charity committed to research, public education and vision health for all Canadians. CNIB provides the services and support necessary for people to enjoy a good quality of life while living with vision loss.”
Volunteers will be provided with training in how to wrap gifts properly at orientation sessions that will be held throughout the month of November. These aren’t mandatory, but promise to be lots of fun as well as help in improving gift wrapping skills.
Volunteers will be able to choose from shifts at various times, and each shift is three hours long. Volunteers are also needed on weekends, which is a perfect solution for those who can’t take time out during weekdays.
CNIB’s kiosk will be situated on the third floor of the mall, and volunteers are still needed to fill up shifts.
Group volunteering is also possible, with some shifts still requiring more than one person to fill up.
There’s no excuse for missing out, so get your schedule and book some shifts!

Robert Pattison is a Stink Bomb

Twilight star, Robert Pattison, has confirmed what some of us have been suspecting all along.
For those of us who’ve always wondered why he looks so dirty and unkempt at almost all public appearances, here’s the answer.
Pattison has admitted that his personal hygiene is “disgusting”.
He elaborates by saying, “It gets to the point where even I can't stand the air around me. My personal hygiene - it's so disgusting! Really, it's that I have very few clothes that I like and I'm travelling all the time so I can't really get any more.”
He cites living out of a suitcase as the reason for hardly ever washing his clothes.
And his bad hygiene hasn’t gone unnoticed. Apparently the actor’s Twilight co stars and movie crew have been suffering because of the nasty smells emanating from the star. Looks like he doesn’t shower or use deodorant either.
And then he complains about not being a hit with the ladies.
Robert, you may not have the time to do your own laundry, which is understandable, but we all know you make enough money to be able to pay to have your clothes cleaned at the dry cleaners.
If not for yourself, or your long suffering co stars, or even the ladies, clean up for your dear fans at least. What if one of them happens to get too close? The Twilighter might not even survive to know what hit the poor soul.
And while you’re getting your clothes laundered, grab some shower gel and shampoo and go take a nice, long, de-stinking shower.

Pamela Anderson, the usually pants-less former Baywatch babe, has outdone her usual pants-less behaviour this time.
The 42 year old is normally spotted wearing shorter than short shorts, but they’re still there at least.
At this year’s Intercontinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball, she decided to abandon even those.
Pam sashayed down the runway at the end of a presentation by designer Richie Rich, in what can only be described as a t-shirt like dress, with not even her usual itsy bitsy shorts underneath. It’s difficult to tell whether she’s wearing anything at all underneath really.
Please put more clothes on, Pam. This type of outfit isn’t becoming for any woman, at least not outside the confines of her own bedroom. And you can’t be fashionable if you don’t wear proper clothes, because in order to be considered well dressed, people actually have to know what you're dressed up in!

Whore! Magazine - Would You Read It?

Even though print media is having a bit of a difficult time, with so many publications choosing to go online instead, a new magazine is all set to hit news stands in the U.S by spring 2010.
What’s interesting about this one is its name.
The magazine to be is titled, Whore! Whether that’s a reflection of the original and possibly controversial material it claims it will publish, or just a promotional gimmick, is yet to be seen.
Whore!’s website says, “We intend to recognize those women, both modern and historical, who strive for experience rather than conventional “goodness,” and continue to fight an age-old battle against expectation.” It goes on to add, “Whore! magazine will be a quarterly print magazine investigating culture, ascendancy, shame, and the desire to be.”
Wonder whether they'll be able to rope in some big names to pose for their cover.
With a name like that, the magazine runs the risk of not being taken seriously, being thought of as trashy, or worse - alienating a lot of women. While one of its aims is celebrating female individuality, with a title like that, it may actually be stereotyping the very women it features and aspires to reach out to.
And how many women would happily leave copies of a magazine called Whore! lying around their house?
Would you buy it?

Pop starlet Lady Gaga has told press she plans to launch her own clothing line someday.
She elaborated by saying, “There hasn't been a commercial artist lately that has embodied avant-garde and couture so insistently as myself”.
That’s interesting, because it seems like she’s more into the “embodiment” of garish, circus type costume outfits.
If her designs are anything like her current dress choices, it’s unlikely there will be many takers. Other than hard core Lady Gaga fans, and costume party goers, that is.

Jessica Simpson in India

Jessica Simpson is touring the world in a bid to understand different cultures and what is considered beautiful in each.
She’s currently in Mumbai, India, to film her reality TV show, The Price of Beauty.
Jessica went all out and showed up at a party thrown in her honour with both hands decorated by henna, and a “bindi” on her forehead.
Well, there’s that famous saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". Maybe all this globe trotting will teach Jessica a thing or two, and she’ll (hopefully) be smarter after the whole experience (remember how she couldn't tell the difference between tuna and chicken on the reality show with her ex husband, Nick Lachey?).
If nothing else, we might get an interesting TV show out of it. Any takers?

Lily Allen - Mean Girl?

Lily Allen was recently in Amsterdam for a performance.
A very avid fan called Zac, who owns a website called Oh-Lily.Com, wanted nothing more but to give her a fanbook that he had put together for her. The fanbook was compiled by him and contained messages for the singer from many of her fans from all over the world. Zac was sure Lily would be thrilled when she saw the book, and set out to make that happen.
Zac first tried presenting her with his loving creation when he saw her walking towards the entrance to the venue but was stopped by some of her security personnel. He then tried reaching out to her and told her he just wanted her to have the fanbook, which Lily hurriedly dismissed by saying she had to go inside.
Not one to give up, Zac tried again once the concert was underway.
This time he threw the book on stage, very close to where Lily was.
Zac claims there was no way Lily would have missed the book. That didn't stop her from walking over it when she exited the stage though. Zac thinks she probably stepped on it by accident, and he still wants nothing more than for her to have the book.
Zac even took to his website later to ask Lily to email, tweet, or post something to let him know that she had infact taken the book, and all his hard work hadn't been in vain.
While it's really sweet on his part to still care and not hate on her, it seems like he really is wasting his time.
Get over yourself, or whatever it is you need to get over Lily! You are what you are because of your fans you know, so you really should show them more gratitude and maybe even a bit of appreciation. Especially when they're running after you themselves just to shower you with nice messages. Learn some manners and act thankful when people show you they like you, instead of giving them such a rude reception!

Guess who was caught texting while driving?
David Beckham was snapped with both hands off the wheel while he texted and cruised around in California, where there is a law against using cell phones or any kind of hand held devices while on the road.
A similar law is going to be implemented in Ontario from today, so drivers on the roads here are going to have to resist such temptations too.
As for Beckham, well, he really should try to set a better example for everyone, especially since he's a celeb, and some people really do look up to some of them!

Lindsay Lohan Being Greedy

Everyone was very surprised when they found out fashion house Ungaro had hired Lindsay Lohan as a fashion consultant.
Lindsay even got to showcase the designs she had worked on in collaboration with the house during Paris fashion week.
The collection didn’t draw much praise, with most saying it wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrendous either. In other words, it was mediocre at best.
For all those who have been puzzled by why a fashion house would sign train wreck Lindsay on, you're about to find out.
It seems like Lindsay signed herself on, because the fashion house isn’t paying her anything.
Lindsay even paid for her own plane ticket to Paris and hotel stay while she was there. She does get free clothes from the fashion house though, but nothing more.
Everyone has to start somewhere, so it’s alright if she isn’t getting paid yet. What is funny though, is the fact that Lindsay’s staff is trying to convince the fashion house into giving her a paycheck.
Ungaro is probably glad they decided not to pay her, especially since people weren’t too crazy about her “expertise” and the clothes it resulted in at the Paris fashion week.
Don't push it Lilo, and get real! Since your acting career isn’t going anywhere soon, there’s no harm in trying your hand at something else, but at least be grateful for being given a chance to do that, instead of trying to get your greedy hands on some cash right away!

Not Even Celebs are Safe from the Recession

Five years ago, Hollywood funny man Eddie Murphy put his New Jersey residence on sale for $30 million.
Recently however, he marked it down. Way down, that is.
His property is now on sale for half its original price, $15 million.
The mansion also includes a bowling alley and a recording studio.
Nicholas Cage’s Bel Air home also suffered a similar fate.
Cage had to reduce its price from $35 to $17.5 million, even though he paid much less for it (about $7 million) when he bought it in 1998.
Luckily for Cage though, someone bought his property, even if it was for less than his asking price. Murphy though, is still waiting for someone to give him a good (or atleast reasonable) deal on his place.
It’s good to know that the economy’s condition hasn’t even spared Hollywood celebrities. The recession has affected a lot of people, and the rich and famous are no exception.
Here’s hoping everyone manages to get through this rough time alright, and it passes by quick!

Plane Crashes a Few Minutes After Take Off from Sharjah Airport

A Sudanese cargo plane crashed shortly after take off from Sharjah International Airport yesterday.
The Boeing 707 was carrying cargo to Khartoum, but started having problems during take off.
The crash took the lives of all six crew members on board, including Captain Mohammad Ali Al Halthawi, who was a resident of Sharjah.
He leaves behind a wife and eight children, and relatives say he was a genuine, warm hearted man, whose house was always open to everyone.
Aviation experts and pilots are still debating the causes of the crash, but some suspect it could have been a result of too much cargo. Pilots say they have often seen cargo planes struggling to take off. Other potential causes are fuel leakage, and engine malfunction.
Eye witnesses, including another pilot, say it was obvious the captain realised his plane was not going to make it. Instead of letting it crash into a heavily populated area, he steered the plane so it nosedived straight into a clear stretch of road.
Onlookers watched in horror as the plane burst into flames. All this happened within minutes of taking off.
Such tragedies seem to be on the rise. With the world relying more and more on transport and technology, perhaps such incidents are bound to happen. That doesn’t make them any less shocking though, or any less tragic.
In many cases, there is someone in the situation who acts as a hero, and in this case, it was Captain Mohammad Ali Al Halthawi, who saved countless other lives, knowing full well he was giving up any chance of his own survival.
People like him make the world a better place for the rest of us, because they provide the silver lining in a situation as tragic and heartbreaking as this one.
Here’s hoping the families of all the deceased can find some peace and comfort as time goes on. Everyone’s prayers are going to be with them, that’s for sure.

Just a few hours after Rihanna’s first single post break up, Russian Roulette, was released on the internet, Brown had an announcement of his own to make.
Brown tweeted that he’d be performing for the first time after everything that transpired sometime next week.
Could he really not have waited a day or two before unleashing his news on everyone? Brown’s timing seems to be just perfect. Suspiciously perfect, that is.

I’m not a winter person at all. Actually, I despise it.
The only thing about winter that makes me slightly happy is winter shopping. It’s that time of the year again, and I need to make a few changes to my wardrobe.
My first update was completed successfully today. I now have a pair of new winter shoes. The last ones I had were suede, and not surprisingly, got dirty really, really fast.
This time I opted for something more practical, something I won’t feel bad about getting dirty after a walk in the snow.
I'd probably still hate to get them soiled though, but that's just me being me.

President Obama was in the running for the award only two weeks after he took over office. He has only been in office for nine months, and already has a Nobel Peace Prize to show for it.

Elvis Presley's Belongings Auctioned Off

Some of Elvis Presley’s belongings were recently put up for sale.
Among the 200 items auctioned off were a clump of the late legend’s hair, a shirt, records, bathrobes, and scarves.
The hair is reported to have been cut off Elvis’s head in 1958, when he decided to go off to join the army. It was auctioned off for $15, 000, while his shirt went for $52, 000.
The thing to think about is, why was a clump of the rockstar’s hair saved and stashed away for such a long time?
More importantly, why would anyone spend thousands of dollars on things they can’t even use in these trying times?
The current state of the economy certainly doesn’t call for such waste. What use is a clump of hair, or a worn shirt, or any of the other items, when you run out of money because you were too busy blowing it on rubbish?

While The Simpsons isn’t really a children's cartoon, it is still a cartoon.

Madonna to be Sued, Evicted?

Madonna is being sued by one of her neighbours in Central Park West.
The reason?
According to neighbour Karen George, Madonna is using her apartment less as a home, and more as a rehearsal studio. This means there’s lots of loud music emanating from it for atleast three hours a day. Apparently this is disturbing and aggravating to most people in the building, who want to live in peace, and not amongst blaring sounds.
If George wins, Madonna could be evicted from her apartment.
Come on Madge, have some courtesy. And while you’re working on your manners, loosen those purse strings a little too. Shell out some cash and rent a proper place for rehearsal, preferably somewhere far, far away from normal people who don’t want to be in the midst of a dance party 24/7.

Salman Khan's First Painting Exhibition in Dubai

Bollywood star and heartthrob Salman Khan was in Dubai last week to host the first ever exhibition of his paintings in the Gulf region.
Khan kept it simple but classy in black, and looked as charming as ever.
Reports have it he arrived by himself, without any pomp or show, and was the perfect host. He seemed thrilled yet humbled that so many people had showed up to have a look at his creations.
Khan even patiently explained all his art work to those who were curious to know what it was about.
He started painting because he felt like he needed an outlet for his emotions and all the things going on in his life.
All the proceeds from his paintings are going to go towards his charity, Being Human.
One of his paintings went for a huge sum of AED 350, 000.
Khan said he was scared no one would show up for his exhibition.
Fear not, Sallu! You may be notorious for being Bollywood’s bad boy, but we love you all the same. Keep painting, because your loyal fans will always be there to support you.

Man Torches Workplace in Dubai

A man in Dubai has been arrested for torching his workplace and stealing money from it.
The 32 year old accountant first embezzled AED 10, 000 from his organisation, and then poured benzene all over his office and set fire to it.
The Judge ruling on the case sentenced the accountant to two years behind bars, after which he will be deported to the Philippines, his home country.
Some of his co-workers testified that they suspected he torched the place because he was rowdy, aggressive, and often played truant from work.
Don’t like your job? Spare everyone the hatred, and just quit.
As for the accountant, well, he’ll have plenty of time off work now that he’s going to be in jail for two whole years. It’s probably not the kind of time off he wanted, but hey, he had it coming!

David Letterman Cheated Even While on Holiday

As more details about late night show host David Letterman’s affairs with some of his female staff members become known, there’s little doubt that
Letterman’s reputation isn't going to stop taking a thrashing any time soon.
Turns out, Letterman didn’t leave his favourite flame, Stephanie Birkitt, behind even when he went on holiday with his then girlfriend and now wife, Regina Lasko, and their six year old son.
Birkitt, who worked as Letterman’s assistant on his show, was drawing $200, 000 at the time, and the two enjoyed each other’s company on various other getaways too.
Poor Regina had no idea what was really going on, and thought her husband was just friends with his significantly younger co-worker, Birkitt.
The question is, did she really never suspect any foul play, ever?
In all truth, she did wait for a good 23 years for the man to propose, so she clearly isn’t too sharp when it comes to taking a clue.
Well, hopefully she doesn't feel like a fool for waiting around for more than two decades for a man, only to find out he wasn’t even faithful to her the whole time.
The lesson to be learned here?
Ladies, if he’s making you wait that long, there’s definitely something else that’s keeping him occupied. Move on, he’s not worth waiting around for forever!

Paris Hilton was seen cozying up to her latest crush at the opening of a new club in New York.
This time though, she decided to skip the human variety, and ended up spending a good chunk of her time with Bentley, a furry little chimpanzee.
In all fairness, he is cute, and they did look like they were having a good time.
Also, he’s probably going to be a lot nicer, kinder, more loving, more loyal, etc, etc, than the usual variety of human males out there.

Gamers are now going to be able to play Rock Band anywhere, anytime. Users will have to tap spots on their iPhone screen that will correspond to guitar, bass, drums, and vocal parts.
The list of songs that's going to be included is said to be pretty good too.
What more could a gamer ask for?

Robert Halderman's Real Motive Behind Blackmailing David Letterman

Apparently there was more to CBS producer Robert Halderman blackmailing late night show host David Letterman than just money, as initially determined.
Turns out, Halderman had another motive – revenge.
One of the women Letterman had illicit relations with from his staff, was Stephanie Birkitt, Halderman’s girlfriend at the time.
Money was simply going to be a bonus for Halderman, whose main motive was to expose and humiliate his ex girlfriend and Letterman for all the distress their actions probably caused him.
While there’s no doubt that most people would like to get back at their exes and those they cheated with, blackmailing someone for $2 million is probably not the smartest way to go about it.
Mainly because it’s not going to be very constructive, because most likely you’ll end up behind bars, just like Halderman did.
The lesson to be learned here? Don't try to get even in dubious ways. Let it go. What goes around, comes around, so sooner or later, life will stick it to them.

Just one of the many good things about having best friends is that they’re always there for you, even when “there” happens to be way down in the dumps.
Family also tends to be ever reliable when it comes to fishing you out of the doldrums.
Two movies, a lunch, a dinner, and lots of dark chocolate icecream and chat time later, I can say I’m finally up and about again.
I suspect the weather here in Ottawa may have had something to do with my sad mood, and winter isn't even here yet. Looks like I'd better stock up on some really good icecream.
Three cheers for the people who matter most to us, and because of whom, we matter.
Three cheers for Bollywood movies too, without which life would perhaps be a bit bland.

Renee and Bradley - On, Off, or Somewhere in Between?

Just when we thought Bradley Cooper could be “the one” for Renee Zellweger, rumours have it otherwise.
Friends of the 40 year old star had said that she’d been really happy since she’d met 34 year old, The Hangover star, Bradley Cooper.
Although Renee kept insisting the two were just having fun and taking things as they came, rumours were rife that she may have finally found her prince charming.
Now it appears that maybe everyone got ahead of themselves, and maybe Renee was telling the truth after all.
That’s because she’s been seen flirting around with a number of different men, none of whom happen to be Cooper.
As if to further drive the point home, her PR rep gave the following statement, “Renee has been out a lot more than usual as she’s busy promoting her new film, My One and Only. She has been loving all the attention and is enjoying herself. She and Bradley are having fun, but they are not exclusive. She can do what she wants.”
Well, she surely can. And what’s with Hollywood romances? It seems like they fizzle out even quicker than they used to!

David Letterman's Dirty Laundry

David Letterman recently made a very personal announcement on his show. The 62 year old late night talk show host admitted to having slept around with a number of women from his staff.
Letterman told everyone that he was being blackmailed by someone who knew all his dirty secrets, and was threatening to go public with the information if Letterman didn’t fork over $2 million.
Letterman’s blackmailer turned out to be Robert Halderman, a CBS producer, who threatened to make a movie or write a book about Letterman’s adventures.
Halderman apparently owed a lot of money, and probably figured this was the quickest and easiest way to make some.
Unfortunately for him though, he was caught red handed in a sting operation, and was arrested by the District Attorney after Letterman went to the authorities for help.
Letterman had to come clean in front of the authorities, but at least his blackmailer was nabbed, and he didn’t have to part with $2 million.
All’s well that ends well, except for the fact that Letterman’s respect suffered a good thrashing. The fact that he owned up to his bad behaviour himself though, rather than being exposed by someone else, means that Letterman gets to regain some of his lost dignity. Whatever is left of it, that is.

Etisalat To Reduce iPhone Rates

Etisalat is lowering the rates of its iPhone packages, including prepaid ones.
Starting tomorrow, its newer, reduced monthly rates for customers on a contract will kick into action. The new rates will also apply to prepaid iPhones, which users can buy from either Etisalat outlets, or other authorised dealers in the UAE.

Lindsay Vs Beyonce: Dressing Room Wars

Lindsay Lohan requested the largest and most luxurious dressing room space in Fort Canning, Singapore, where she was hosting the F1 Rocks.

And she might have been able to get away with it too, had it not been for the fact that Beyonce had also asked for the very same room, and had already been promised she would get it.

Lindsay decided to ignore that however, and set up camp in Beyonce’s room.

When Beyonce showed up with her entourage of more than 70, she wasn’t as accommodating as Lindsay had probably imagined.

In true diva style, Beyonce made her security guards send Lindsay packing, and ordered vodka and champagne for her people, as well as slimming shakes and a mini gym for herself.

Not only did she kick Lindsay out, but she also showed everyone who the real diva was. Way to go Beyonce??

Hurt Mischa Decides to Get In Shape

TV star Mischa Barton, who shot to fame because of her role in The O.C, has been feeling down in the dumps lately.
Reports have it that she’s very “hurt” over being left out of the promo shots of her new TV series, The Beautiful Life.
Mischa has been left out of the racy shots, in which the other cast members are barely wearing anything.
That’s not that surprising, considering Mischa’s excessive partying, out of whack lifestyle, and subsequent bloating, and sources say she’s aware of it.
It seems like some good did come out of it though, because Mischa is now more keen than ever to get back to her former svelte self, and has even joined a gym which she visits daily.
Sources say she’s been looking healthier and happier than she has in a long time.
Too bad then, that the show just got pulled off the air because of mixed reviews and poor viewership.
Uh-uh, that's not going to help matters at all. Let's hope Mischa doesn't take it too hard, and doesn't relapse into her previous out of control ways!

Tawam Hospital to Launch Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Tawam Hospital is going to launch a breast cancer awareness campaign during the whole month of October.
October is typically used to raise awareness about the disease all over the world, and Tawam aims to do the same in the UAE.
The Health Authority of Abu-Dhabi (HAAD), and Abu-Dhabi’s health services organisation (SEWA), are supporting Tawam in its efforts during the coming month.
Although the campaign aims to raise awareness about breast cancer all over the UAE, its activities will be largely concentrated in the cities of Abu-Dhabi and Al-Ain, especially in those areas where awareness is low.
The campaign will educate men, women, and families about breast cancer by highlighting the importance of early detection, regular check-ups, and self examinations.
Tawam hospital is also going to screen women aged 40 and above free of charge, using their mobile mammography van, in the areas they visit.
Lots of family and community oriented activities will also be organised, to make the learning experience fun as well as educational.
There will even be a “Fun Run” at Al Tuwaya Public Park in Al-Ain, and it’s open to anyone who wishes to participate.
As a mark of solidarity, other organisations in the community, including some media organisations, are going to celebrate “Pink Day” on October 26th. Everyone will wear at least one piece of clothing that is pink.
Tawam Hospital wants to make sure people are aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, as well as being pro-active about their health. It emphasises the importance of early detection in being able to combat the disease successfully.
They do say prevention is better than cure. Here’s hoping the hospital succeeds in raising awareness, and saving lots and lots of lives.

Most people of South Asian descent are aware of what Paan is. For those who aren’t so sure,
Paan is made of various spices and ingredients that are mixed together and wrapped up in a betel leaf. Tobacco can be added for those who want. There are different types of Paan, each with its own combination of ingredients and unique flavour.
Chewing Paan is an Indian tradition, but has spread to countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Bollywood mega-star, Amitabh Bachan, sang and danced to a song about Paan in the 1978 movie, Don. Decades later, Shahrukh Khan did the same in the movie’s remake.
More recently however, signs of Paan chewing have also been found in Gulf countries like Qatar and the UAE.

The good news for Gwyneth Paltrow fans is that ZOEtee’s has launched a collection designed by her.
Gwyneth picked out the fabrics, cuts, and packaging of the clothing line.
The bad news is, the collection is apparently pretty drab and boring, fit only for women who prefer the granny look.
The colours that dominate are sombre ones, like gray and black.
The collection isn’t getting any rave reviews, and is hardly even selling.
Well, what can you expect, Gwynnie? People aren’t going to buy trash just because you have your name on it. Looks like you’re going to have to work harder if you want people to shell out some cash, instead of just slap your name on stuff and hope people will pay for it!

Rihanna Still Stuck on Chris

Rihanna’s friends say the 21 year old singer is still in love with her ex, Chris Brown, and often cries and tells them she can’t live without him.
Instead of rooting for him to get some jail time for his battering behaviour, Rihanna’s friends say that she was relieved he got off light.
Even though Brown had beaten Rihanna twice before, Rihanna still wishes things between them hadn’t ended.
She was even upset that the judge had ordered Brown to stay at least 50 yards away from her, 10, if they were at the same event.
Rihanna never requested the judge for any such order, and is unhappy about it.
The judge warned Brown that he would face jail time if he disobeyed the order.
While Rihanna is said to be feeling extremely sad and lonely without him, Brown seems to be doing just fine.
A bit too fine, that is, because he was spotted partying with his pals to celebrate getting off so light for his bad behaviour.
Move on, Riri! You can do so much better than a girlfriend beater who doesn’t even have the decency to act ashamed. Instead, he chose to go around painting the town red the same day he received his sentence!
Talk about being an insensitive jerk!

Sugababes Member Leaves Group

London based English pop group, Sugababes, just announced that its last original member, Keisha Buchanan, will no longer be with the group.
The group’s official webpage confirmed yesterday that singer Jade Ewen will be replacing her.
Keisha, who’s been a member of the group for the last 11 years, said on Twitter that she was sad her time in the group had come to an end, but she’s excited about what the future holds.
Keisha stated that she still has nothing but the best to say about her band mates, and there were no fights or arguments that lead to the decision.
She did admit however, that it was not her choice to leave the band.
Record company, Island Records, has decided to keep Keisha onboard as a solo artist.
It’s clear then, that her exit from the group isn’t because of issues with the record label. But if it is indeed like she claims, and she doesn’t have any conflicts with her band members either, then what could be the reason for her having to leave without wanting to?
Looks like the mysteries just keep coming today!

Reality TV star, Kim Kardashian’s sister, Khloe Kardashian, is all set to marry her boyfriend of just a few weeks.
Khloe and NBA player, Lamar Odom, are said to be all set for the wedding this coming Sunday.
Guests were informed over the phone, and the ceremony will take place at a family friend’s house.
When quizzed about her upcoming wedding, Khloe stayed mum, preferring not to confirm or deny anything at all.
What’s the rush people? With most Hollywood marriages biting the dust anyway, why would someone want to take a risk like that?

Calligraphers Produce Authentic Copy of Qur'an in Three Days

In a Ramadan forum for Quranic Calligraphy in Dubai, a team of skilled calligraphers produced a copy of the Holy Qur’an in three days and three nights.
A special ceremony was held at Zabeel Palace in Dubai to honour the calligraphers and the members of the jury who attested to the authenticity of the text.
The calligraphers were praised for their determination and passion in producing an accurate copy of the Qur’an in such a short time.
The copy is said to be exquisitely beautiful and will be displayed at the UAE museum.
Now that’s really taking the spirit of Ramadan to heart, and having something to show for it too!

Beggars and Cell Phone Peddlers Try to Take Advantage of Ramadan

Sharjah police arrested 120 beggars, and 40 illegal cell phone peddlers this Ramadan season.
Begging is illegal in the UAE, and beggars often beg in residential areas, ringing doorbells and going from door to door, which can be quite a nuisance for many residents.
Ninety of the beggars were caught during the last three weeks of Ramadan, and they were all between 40 and 50 years of age.
The beggars have now been detained as they are all illegal residents, and will be shipped off to their respective countries.
Meanwhile, illegal cell phone peddlers tried to sell their ill-gotten goods not just in residential, commercial, and industrial areas, but also mosques.
Three of the cell phone dealers were also found selling pornography in residential areas.
The crackdowns were the result of a campaign carried out by the authorities to root out illegal immigrants and residents carrying out illegal activities.
It seems like the beggars were looking to take full advantage of the spirit of the season, hoping that they’d be able to make lots of money off of people’s charitable emotions during the month.
The cell phone peddlers on the other hand, didn’t spare even mosques in their pursuits for illegal gains.
Hopefully now though, they’ll take this Ramadan as a lesson in virtue, and not repeat their mistakes once they’re back in their home countries!

New Flamingo Breeding Colony Discovered in Abu Dhabi

A team of biologists from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) recently discovered a breeding colony of flamingos somewhere in the west side of the emirate.
A total of 1,954 flamingo nests were found in the colony, with at least 224 of them currently in use. The rest had already been used, or were abandoned because of a storm in the area.
The EAD team has put the number of flamingos at 18,000, the highest that has ever been recorded in the country.
This is such an important discovery because the birds have only bred twice before in the UAE’s history, once as long as a decade ago.
EAD's biologists were aware of the site’s existence since 2005, after it was located via satellite, and have kept an eye on it since.
The usual number of flamingos during summer time is around 10, 000, so this is a significant jump.
The EAD will be monitoring the area, just to make sure everything’s running smoothly, and also to determine future conservation needs.
The UAE has a diverse array of wildlife, much of which is unfortunately in danger because of increased expansion and development.
Here’s wishing the EAD team lots of luck in their endeavours, as well as lots more flamingo sightings!

MizzPinkx Thought Bubbles - On Housework and Staying Positive

One of my pet peeves is doing housework.
I know it sounds lazy and spoilt, but it’s something you get quite used to when living in Gulf countries. House help, whether full or part time, is available readily and easily, and doesn’t involve breaking the bank.
I honestly don't know anyone there who does all their housework themselves.
Cooking, a bit of cleaning, picking up things, sure, but not full on, top to bottom, cleaning the entire house, kind of work.
And when I do have to do it, it leaves me feeling vaguely irritated and annoyed for the rest of the day afterwards. Now that I’m back in Ottawa, I’m finding it particularly hard to break out of my previous luxury filled habits. Not that I have significantly better habits when I’m here, but you know what I mean.
Then again, maybe I just need to remain positive about the whole thing, and hope that one day, I’ll be one of those people who like doing housework. Or more realistically, at least be able to do it without getting into a foul mood.
After all, if a 107 year old woman can set her sights on getting married for a 23rd time (see post below) and start over again, why can’t I just learn to clean a bathroom without getting ticked off?
Which reminds me, I have a suitcase to unpack.

107 Year Old Wants to Say "I do" for 23rd Time

On a lighter note, a 107 year old woman in Malaysia is all set for her 23rd marriage.
This, despite her being currently married to a man who’s 70 years her junior.
Wook Kundor, as she is called, says that she wants to remarry because she fears her husband will go off in search of another, much younger woman.
She says he is currently in drug rehab, and worries that once he gets out, he’ll take full advantage of his improved health.
The only problem is, women generally outlive men, so it might be rather difficult for her to find someone her own age. No harm in trying though, because it seems like she hasn't lost her zest for life, or men, for that matter!

18 Die in Stampede in Karachi

In yet some other sad news, at least 18 women and girls died yesterday in a stampede in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi.
The women were gathered in a small building with a tight passageway to collect rations of flour when some of them panicked because of the place becoming increasingly crowded. The ensuing stampede resulted in the casualties. Some of those killed, died because they suffocated in the cramped conditions.
In a country that has been rocked with political and financial instability, such an incident is tragic, but not new.
Pakistan’s government needs to step up and take responsibility before incidents like this become the norm. How much more will it take for the government to shape up?
Innocent civilian lives are lost without anyone being held accountable, and it’s high time that changes. Let’s hope this tragedy was the last in a long line, and not just an indicator of more to come.

R.I.P Patrick Swayze

Hollywood actor, Patrick Swayze, who shot to fame with his performance in the movie, Dirty Dancing, passed away yesterday.
He was battling pancreatic cancer, and was 57 years old.
Swayze passed away in L.A with his family by his side. He was battling with the disease since March 2008, and kept working even though he knew the cancer was incurable.
Here’s wishing his family and loved ones lots of strength and courage to get through this tough time.

Dog Fight!

When Gerard Butler and his pooch, Lolita, went for a walk recently, the actor’s pug ended up getting attacked by a greyhound. That’s the story according to Butler anyway.
The owners of the greyhound however, insist that's not what happened.

They say Butler’s pug attacked their dog first, and when they told the actor he should have had her on a leash, Butler responded by behaving rather badly.
He not only cussed them out, but also proceeded to hit their dog on the head.
The greyhound’s owners then called the police to file harassment charges against Butler, but by then Butler was nowhere to be found.
Now, now, Gerard, just because your dog was attacked by another one, is no reason for you to behave like one too.
